Osmo Polyx-Oil Tints | Why Osmo
Some wood fibres are so beautiful that they should be kept 100% natural. Other types of wood fibre can do with a hint of colour. But the main requirement is that the surface has to be allowed to breathe naturally, to be fully protected against all kinds of spills and to contain none or as little chemicals as possible. Well, you have just described Osmo oils. Osmo does not just make floor oils, they are the “floor oil makers”. All Osmo products are food certified and safe to use in all food processing and food preparation areas. The product can maintain your wood surface as natural or as “wet” look as you desire. Within Osmo`s range you will find the product that you are looking for. White, grey, natural, black tint, etc. Satin or matt 100%. Wet look or natural. You name it. If you are on the market for a new tinted hardwax oil, try the Osmo range.
Osmo Polyx-Oil Tints | Where To Use It
Most Osmo oils are suitable for indoor use only. This product is compatible with all types of semi solid or hardwood floors, furniture, benches, walls, panels, frames, doors, toys, worktops, etc. The product is food safe so it is compatible with kids toys and food processing areas. To be applied in a two coats system over a clean, sealant free and dry surface. It can be applied with low cost tools like a cloth or a flat mopping system with an applicator mop head or it can be applied with a low speed floor buffer when buffing and sealing large floor areas. The new Osmo Polyx-Oil Tints recommended coverage area is around 25 to 30 sq metre per 1L but it can vary from surface to surface.
- The product can be applied as the main sealer x 2 coats
- The product can be applied as a tint, first coat and then overcoat with another Osmo hardwax oil
- The product can be used as a refresher to refresh surfaces already sealed with the new Osmo Polyx-Oil Tints
It can be used to seal and protect residential and very high traffic floor areas. The main advantage is the fact that oiled floors can be refreshed in sections, unlike varnished floors that require full sanding & then revarnishing.
Osmo Polyx-Oil Tints | How To Apply It
All floor oils have to penetrate the wood to be able to dry. For that to happen, the surface has to be sealant free. All pre-existing finishes have to be removed in full. Sand the surface starting from 40 grit all the way to 100 grit without skipping between the grit. Vacuum well and prepare for oiling. Shake the tin of oil well and put a pair of gloves on. Soak a cloth in the oil and use the cloth to apply the product around the edges and around all narrow areas. Do not over soak the surface. Apply enough oil to make the surface wet looking and remove the excess. The same process applies to the wider areas. Remember to move along with the fibre of the wood and not against it. When done with the first coat the surface has to look “wet look” but not puddled up with oil. It will dry matt. The second coat should be applied about 12 hours later using the same system.
***overusing the oil will create a sticky surface and the floor cannot dry. The hardwax oil has to be able to penetrate the wood to dry. Any oil that cannot penetrate the wood will semi dry over time but it will not look right. So the application of the product has to be spot on if proper results are to be achieved***
This part is totally ignored by most people so it creates a lot of issues. Hardwax oil is not like a varnish. This product can evaporate over time, it can be affected by chemicals, sunlight, changes in temperature, etc. Once or twice per year the surface has to be recoated or refreshed. No sanding is required, just use the same hardwax oil you have used to seal the floor to refresh the floor. Areas that are getting more traffic like the kitchen floors, halls or corridors, should be refreshed more often. Apply 1 coat of oil before going to bed and the job is done. Ignoring the refreshing routine will end up costing you big money and having to restore the surface in full. Also essential, please use as little water as possible and use the Osmo range of oiled floor cleaners.
