If you are sanding wooden floors and if you are planning to remove old sealers and polishes, you will need to start with 24-40 grit sanding discs and go up to 100 grit. Use the most aggressive ones to break heavy duty sealers and use the finest ones to smooth out the scratches made by the aggressive sanding discs. So, if you have just removed an old polyurethane floor lacquer with 24 grit sandpaper, you will have to re-sand the area with 40 grit sandpaper, then 60 grit, then 80 grit & then the 100 grit sandpaper. While using the most aggressive sandpaper you are likely to create deep scratches on the wood surfaces so to level up those imperfections it is essential that you go through all grits. 100 grit should be your final sanding before applying the sealer. Any finer sandpaper might create a less absorbent wood surface and the wood might not absorb stains or lacquers well.
