How To Apply Bona White Floor Primer On Wooden Floors

How To Apply Bona White Floor Primer On Wooden Floors

Wood floors are back in fashion for a number of reasons. Firstly, wood floors are manufactured from natural and fully renewable materials. Wood floors are cozy, available in a wide range of colours and easy to maintain. Wood floors can really make a statement about your home or business. Some people were replacing wooden floors with cheaper and more polluting plastic floors, laminate floors and tile floors but most people just got sick of these types of floors and nowadays the real wood flooring businesses are booming. A major advantage of the real wood floors is the fact that these floors can be easily refinished many times over and after each refinishing the floors life expectancy is increased by around 10 years. Due to the innovations within the wood floor finishes industry, the colour options are nearly unlimited. One of those highly efficient and easy to use products, is the new Bona White Floor Primer. A fine quality waterborne wood floor primer that is compatible with pretty much all types of real wood floors and it can create a beautiful natural white wash effect.

The New Bona White Floor Primer Is A Game Changer

The beauty of the real wood floors is the fact that they are available in a wide variety of colours. If for whatever reason you are not happy with the way your floors look right now, you can easily change the colour, by brightening up or darkening down the wood colours with special primers and wood stains. A really dark cherry or walnut wood floor can be transformed into a beautiful white wash finish while a really white or yellow pine can be transformed into a beautiful and natural looking walnut floor. In this article we will talk about the process of brightening up dark types of wood fibres.

A few years back Bona invented the new Bona White Floor Primer and the way people achieve a white wash effect has changed for good. The new Bona White Floor Primer is much easier to use, requires less time to apply and dry, it fully prevents wood yellowing and is overcoatable with pretty much any type of water based or solvent based wood floor lacquer or varnish. Even better, the level of white can be fully controlled by the applicator and it can be made to look like there is a hint of white in the grain of the wood or it can be made fully white. Whatever way you apply the products and regardless of how many coats of white you apply, you will never lose the fiber of the wood. The wood will still look natural but white washed.

What Type Of Wood Is Compatible With The New Bona White Floor Primer?

All of it. There are people that are looking to brighten up the wood to create bright colours or to just give a modern look to an otherwise dull and classic wood type of floor and there are people that are just looking to prevent the yellowish of the wood from coming back after the wood was sanded. The good thing about the new Bona White Floor Primer is that it is compatible with all types of wooden floors, wooden furniture, wood frames and other types of wood surfaces that are sealant free, dry and clean.

How Many Coats Of Bona White Floor Primer Should I Apply?

As many as you want until the right level of white is achieved. The good thing about this particular white primer is that it can be applied in as many coats as the user wants to apply. It all depends on the level of white wash that the user is planning to achieve.

Coat 1

After the first coat of Bona White Floor Primer, the wood will not look much different but the product will seal in the yellowish of the floor and it will prevent the wood from changing colour again as it ages.

Coat 2

After the second coat is done, the whitish of the white primer starts being visible. It is not pure white but the white is visible mostly in the grain of the wood. Most people are happy with this finish so no more coats are required.

Coat 3

Coat 3 is only required if the floor is a really dark fiber or if the owner of the floor is looking for a very bright white wash effect. 90% of people who use the new Bona White Floor Primer, will do a maximum of 3 coats but more coats are possible if required.

Is The New Bona White Floor Primer A Varnish As Well?

No, it is not a varnish. The new Bona White Floor Primer is a primer only and its main job is to prime and prepare the wood surface for further coatings. It does not matter if 1 or 10 coats of the white wash primer are applied, the floor still needs to be overcoated with at least 2 coats of a decent traffic water based floor lacquer. Left untreated, the surface will wear off fast and it will look bad within a matter of months.

Best Tools For Applying Floor Primers

All Bona primers can be applied with the same tools as floor lacquers. The amazing Bona White Floor Primer is a water based floor primer that can be applied with a good varnishing brush around the edges and a good quality varnishing roller for the larger areas. Do not use wall painting rollers to avoid streaking the floor and creating uneven and patchy looking finishes.

Surface Preparation

The amazing Bona White Floor Primer is a professional white wash floor primer that is compatible with all types of unsealed wood surfaces. The product has to penetrate the wood in full to be able to create the desired white wash effect. To be able to achieve professional results and to make sure that the product is not wasted, you should follow the following recommendations:

Sanding

Make sure that all pre-existing finishes and all wood imperfections are sanded up before priming the floor. The primer has to reach the bare wood and penetrate it in full. Do not apply the new Bona White Floor Primer over already sealed wood floors or floors that are not made from real wood. To avoid creating patchy finishes, please make sure that the new Bona White Floor Primer is used undiluted and the floor was finished with 100 to maximum 120 grit sanding paper.

Vacuuming

Vacuum the floor a number of times, then vacuum again and then vacuum more. All the fine dust particles that are hiding in the floor gaps, around and under the skirting boards or all over the furniture, are likely to create a very rough finish if not fully removed before varnishing. Do not sand the surface between the coats to avoid removing the white primer. Re-sand and vacuum the floor after the first coat of floor lacquer was applied and has dried in full.

Protect The Surfaces

This is a white primer so any surface that is touched with the new Bona White Floor Primer is likely to become whitish. Before applying the white wash to a larger area, make sure to use masking tape to protect all the surfaces that do not require priming but are located within the area where the priming happens.

Varnishing Or Lacquering The Surface

As we have mentioned above, the floor has to be sealed with at least two coats of floor lacquer. To maintain a beautiful natural finish, we would highly recommend the use of a water based floor lacquer from Chimiver, Bona or Tover. Try to use a matt or a semi gloss finish to avoid creating a laminate finish on your newly refinished floors. Below, we will recommend some of the most beautiful floor lacquers that you should use to seal your floors.

What Not To Do With The New Bona White Floor Primer

You are just about to use one of the most popular white wash or scandinavian finish white primers. While the product is very easy to use, there are still ways of doing it wrong. Many people do not read the label and instead of following the manufacturers recommendations, use their own imagination while applying the primer.

Dilution

Do not dilute the product and do not mix up the new Bona White Floor Primer with any other white primers from other brands or other primers from Bona. This product has a specific chemical composition and by messing around with it you could create some unwanted reactions. Use it as it is.

Sealed Surfaces

Make sure to only apply the product to a new or newly sanded surface. If the product can`t reach the wood, it will not look right and it will not dry right.

Wood Only

Do not apply the new Bona White Floor Primer over any other type of floor besides a real wood floor like hardwood floors, engineered wood floors, semi solid wood floors, wood furniture, wood doors and frames, wood handles, wood toys, etc. The laminated floors are not real wood floors so are not compatible with the new Bona White Floor Primer.

Thin Layers

Apply the product in thin layers and remember to always move along with the fiber of the wood to avoid streaking the floor. Roll the primer until the wood has absorbed it in full and the surface looks wet but not soaked.

Respect The Drying Periods

After the initial application, the floor will look just like before the application. The white wash effect will only start being visible after the surface has dried. Only do more coats after the first coat is fully dry.
