One of the benefits of wood floors is that you can restore their new look and feel without having to pull out the boards and replace them. Here, all that is needed is a round of floor sanding and refinishing. The old finish coats are abraded off the floor, exposing the bare wood, and fresh new treatments applied. There are different signs of wear that you may notice on your wood floor. These include:

  • Plenty of scratches

With wood floors, there will be some scratches over time. This is a result of daily use of the floor, with the intensity of scratches increasing with the amount of traffic handled by the establishment. A couple of scratches are not really a cause for concern. However, when the surface is covered in them, it becomes an eyesore, dragging down the decor of the premises. The deeper the scratches, the higher the risk to the structural integrity of the wood. This is because when the scratches get to the bare wood, it provides an entryway for moisture and more dirt, which accelerates the deterioration of the wood. A compromised wood finish needs to be redone in order to protect your installation.

  • Discolouration

Are your wood floors greying? This is a sign of water damage. It is caused by the thinning of the coating that has been applied, meaning it is time to refinish the floor. Ignoring this will cause the greying floor to darken further, and when it becomes black the boards will need to be replaced.

  • Fading

This is usually caused by sunlight on the wood, and ruins the decor of the premises. Sanding and refinishing the floors will give them a consistent colour in line with your interior décor preferences.

  • Significant cupping or warping

Cupping, crowning and warping are due to the expansion and contraction of the wood due to the changes in temperature and humidity of the surroundings. Small changes are normal, going with the seasonal fluctuations. However, when changes don’t resolve, it is a pointer to the structure of the wood being altered. Before sanding though, the floor should be allowed to stabilise – and it’s recommended that this is carried out by a professional, to ensure that the surface is in proper condition for the sanding and refinishing, as well as that the right amount of material will be sanded off, to prevent a case of too much wood bring removed

  • Splintering

Are there splinters along the edges of the wood boards? These are indicators of the protective coating being worn out. For mild cases, the sanding and refinishing will resolve the issue, but for severe damage the affected boards may need to be replaced.

  • Get a new look

In some cases, the property owner simply wants to change things up – perhaps altering the colour of the floor by applying a different wood stain, or using a finish with a different gloss level. With refinishing, you can bring a whole new look to your interior space, without having to change the floorboards.

Benefits of Using the Tover Idrolak DR 97 For Floor Refinishing

  • Two-component protection

This is a water based two-component lacquer that enhances the wear resistance attributes of the floor. It enables the treated surface to withstand high traffic levels as well as the household chemicals that would have resulted in damage to the structure. This is key in preserving the structural integrity of the wood floor, and enabling it to last for long. Moreover, by increasing the duration in between consecutive floor renovation tasks, this contributes to lowering the expenses that go into the building maintenance process.

Note that the product comes in two parts: the Tover Idrolak DR 97 itself, and the hardener that it is mixed with. These two are mixed with a 10:1 ratio, and the catalysed mixture is what is spread onto the floor.

  • Maintains the natural effect of the floor

Do you want to keep that look of pure wood? You can achieve that with the Tover Idrolak DR 97 treatment. When it comes to sheen levels, you can get the lacquer in your preferred version, be it Semi-gloss, Matt or Extra Matt.

  • Easy application

The formulation makes the application a breeze for the contractor carrying out the task. For instance, its levelling properties enables the coats to be uniformly applied, with an even build throughout the Tover Idrolak DR 97 layer.

Here are the application steps:

  1. Start by shaking the two components (lacquer and hardener) well in their respective bottles, then mix them well, and allow 5 to 10 minutes for the required reactions in the mixture to occur.
  2. Spread the catalysed finish on the floor. The first coat should be generously applied to ensure that the wood has been sufficiently wet, and ensure that the coat is uniform. Here, it is recommended that you work with tools like microfibre medium hair rollers, as these enable you to spread the Tover Idrolak DR 97 homogeneously over the floor. Alternately you can go the spray application route, but in this case, you will need to have 10% water dilution.
  3. Allow 4 to 5 hours drying time.
  4. Lightly sand the floor. Here the goal is simply to smoothen the surface, so don’t go sanding deeply through the first coat. In fact, you should use fine abrasives, such as 180 grit sandpaper.
  5. Vacuum or clean the surface to remove the sanding dust that is generated.
  6. Apply the second coat
  • If a third Tover Idrolak DR 97 coat is required, such as for those cases where the floor handles very high levels of traffic, then you can add a third coat. However, first wait for 2-3 hours after the second coat has been applied. In addition, you won’t need to sand the surface before adding the third coat.

There are variations that can be made to the finishing process, depending on the particular situation. For instance, if you want the finish to emphasise on the natural effect of the floor, then you can apply a waterbased primer such as Idrofondo H20 or Mito, Fast&Full, which will replace the first coat of the Tover Idrolak DR 97. You can also achieve a warmer result by using Tone-Up as part of the process.

It is recommended that you carry out a spot test on a hidden area of the floor, that way you will have an accurate picture of the end result of the finishing cycle that you want to implement.
